In 1930, an ambitious and passionate Laura Wolstein launches a women's boutique on Montreal's St. Hubert Street, igniting the path for female entrepreneurs. The store's personalized service, beloved by customers, remains central to our ethos. Laura's grandson, Kalman Fisher, who later becomes CEO and expands the brand nationwide, begins his journey here.
1940-1949
Empowering change
In 1940, the province of Quebec grants women the right to vote, which ignites a surge of women joining the workforce. Building upon her success on St Hubert Street, Laura relocates to a newer and larger boutique in Verdun, where she will provide working women empowering, timeless, and high-quality wardrobes.

A Fashion Revolution
In 1973, amidst women's workforce surge, Laura's grandson Kalman assumes business leadership. Sensing the resonance of her vision, he opens a second store in Montreal's Saint-Laurent borough, sparking the brand's nationwide journey.

Melanie Lyne Era
In 1984, the Melanie Lyne brand debuts, named after Kalman’s wife. This new label is created to dress professionals and industry leaders who are trend seekers and want fashion that will mirror their ambition. Responding to growing demand for quality workwear, Laura opens its inaugural Toronto outlets in 1989. Simultaneously, Kalman Fisher pushes for brand expansion. Recognizing a gap for petite sizes, Laura introduces Laura Petites, serving women 5'4" and under, with stores in Montreal shopping centers.
1990-1999
Decade of Expansion
In the 1990s, Laura expands extensively, opening 80 new stores across Canada to meet the demand for high-quality women's wear spurred by the Girl Power movement. In 1995, Laura Plus emerges with eight stores, furthering the mission to enhance every woman's confidence and style.
2000-2009
Inclusivity & Community
Dedicated to celebrating all silhouettes, Laura introduces double and triple concept stores, fostering inclusive store experiences for all women. Laura Canada forges ties with the Canadian Cancer Society, contributing over $2 million to cancer research by decade's end.
